With the lack of recent rainfall and upcoming forecasts of below average rain, the Greater Sydney area is currently in drought.
Since June 1, 2019, the NSW government introduced Level 1 water restrictions, with Level 2 water restrictions being introduced from December 10, 2019. These restrictions are enforced across the Sydney region, affecting both residential and commercial water usage.
If you have recently bought turf or are considering purchasing fresh grass, keep reading to see how you can maintain a lively lawn despite the current circumstances.
What can you do?
With the new water restrictions enforced, there is no need to fear! You can still maintain a fresh new lawn while being mindful of the drought.
For those who already have established turf, you can no longer use a hose, but instead use a water bucket or can to water your lawn before 10am and after 4pm. You can also use a drip irrigation or smart watering system during the same time but for a limit of 15 minutes per watering zone.
However, if you are looking at installing new turf, there are more flexible conditions introduced to help your lawn establish. This has come in the form of a four-week watering plan that is in effect from the day of your delivery.
During this four-week period, you will be able to water your lawn with a hose equipped with a trigger nozzle for those initial four weeks. Alternatively, you will also be able to use sprinklers and watering systems during this time for new turf larger than 30m2.
This means you can fortunately still water that brand-new Bermuda grass you were planning on purchasing. However, you must keep your receipt as proof of purchase in case a Sydney Water officer asks for proof.
Read below to find out more about the watering plan:
Week 1: During the first week, you can water your lawn up to three times a day for a maximum of 30 minutes each time at any time of the day.
Week 2 and 3: During these two weeks, you can only water your lawn up to twice a day for up to 15 minutes each. This can only be done before 10am or after 4pm.
Week 4: During this final week, you can only water your turf once each day before 10am or after 4pm for up to 30 minutes. This can only be done three times during this week.
Once the four weeks are up, you must follow the regular water restrictions which includes watering before 10am and after 4pm with a water bucket/can or smart irrigation system for a maximum of 15 minutes.
Alternatively, you can still water your garden using a drip irrigation system, recycled water or greywater.
As mentioned above, there is an exemption process of a watering plan with Sydney Water that allows customers to water their newly laid lawn for the first four weeks of purchase ONLY. This enables the grass to take immediate activation and prevent it from drying out.
When purchasing with Sydney Lawn & Turf Supplies, you automatically gain the four-week watering exemption. On the off-chance your turf doesn’t establish in this time, a further possible exemption can be granted subject approval from Sydney Water.
In order to sign up for the extended exemption, all customers MUST apply to Sydney Water by email. You can email your exemption request here.
When you email your request for the extended exemption, you will need to include:
- Reason to keep watering
- Size of your turfed area
- Address of where turf has been laid
- Your name and contact details
Once approved, you will then receive a letter and a sticker/permit from Sydney Water that outlines the details of the exemption.
For any enquiries, please call 13 20 92 or visit Sydney Water.
If you own a business, you can alternatively apply for an exemption on their webpage through an online form.
Even though there are current water restrictions, this is possibly the best time to purchase new turf for your lawn. With the active sun out, you will want to buy your grass now to get it sorted.
This will allow you to take advantage of the sunny season and start getting it settled and established while it is warm and light. With the further water exemption possible, this will enable your new Sir Grange turf to fully prosper to its full potential and build a solid presence on your property.
