Stampede Hybrid Buffalo Grass
Stampede Hybrid Buffalo is an interploid hybrid St. Augustinegrass (buffalograss; Stenotaphrum secundatum (Walt.) Kuntze). It was developed using embryo rescue technology through controlled pairwise crossing between a polyploid buffalograss (chromosome number: 2n = 2x = 30) and a diploid buffalograss (chromosome number: 2n = 2x = 18).
During trials, while cultivar performance varied across different sites, one consistently outperformed the rest, excelling in all key areas. Stampede Hybrid Buffalo Grass proved to be the best-performing cultivar during winter in some very cold and harsh environments, which is a crucial factor for many turf producers. Remarkably, Stampede remained unaffected by disease during the humid summer, whereas most other buffalo cultivars were impacted. HOW TO INSTALL STAMPEDE HYBRID BUFFALO GRASS
Stampede Hybrid Buffalo can be installed year-round, although it will establish more quickly in warmer months. Lay the turf as soon as possible after delivery on a 100 mm bed of quality turf underlay, then apply Lawn Solutions Australia Lawn Launcher at the recommended rate to support root development and soil moisture. Roll the new turf to improve contact with the soil, then soak it thoroughly for the first 10 to 14 days, or until it is established. Once established, reduce watering and only irrigate when the lawn shows signs of dryness, particularly during warmer weather.
HOW TO MAINTAIN STAMPEDE HYBRID BUFFALO GRASS
Maintain a healthy Stampede Hybrid Buffalo lawn by mowing between 20 and 60 mm with sharp mower blades, never removing more than one-third of the leaf at a time. Fertilise at least three times a year, ideally in late spring, mid to late summer and late autumn, and water in fertiliser after application. Water deeply only when the grass appears dry, aiming to soak the top 100 mm of soil and watering early in the morning for best results. Stampede performs well with at least three hours of direct sunlight each day, while regular feeding, sensible mowing and early pest monitoring will help keep the lawn dense, green and resistant to weeds.
